Light Photography

Not exactly photographs of nature but so fascinating. Never photographed fireworks before but when I heard them start I grabbed my camera and jumped into action. These amazing photographs were the result. I wonder what kind of results I might have gotten had I had my tripod?

A Red Panda

Found in temperate bamboo forests, the red panda is mainly a tree dweller. Rarely seen at ground level, they eat, sleep, and play in the branches. I photographed this red panda at the Calgary Zoo.

Endangered Snow Leopard

As an endangered species snow leopards are excellent navigators of high rugged mountains. They enjoy a diet of Mountain goats, sheep, deer, boars, marmots and pika. Photographing these snow leopards was really a stroke of luck.

The River Otter

River otters use their tails and long bodies to move through water. They are found in freshwater and coastal marine habitats, including rivers, lakes, marshes and swamps in Canada and the United States. The river otter is a carnivore hunting for fish at night. They also survive on a menu of turtles, crayfish and crabs.

The Wolves are Out

The Grey Wolf

Groups of wolves, called packs, most often roam in groups of five to nine. Strong hierarchies exist within these pack. The dominant male is called the alpha male and is top dog while the alpha female is next in line. Rank within the pack determines which animals mate and which eat first. There habitat include Arctic tundra, forest, prairie and arid landscapes in Canada and northern United States, Europe and Asia.

I call these wolves the elusive ones as they have been my biggest challenge to date to spot and capture in photography.

African Mandrill

Mandrills are the largest of the monkey species. The call Africa home. The bright colors that they don is believed to help Mandrills recognize one another given the low light of the forest floor.

Photographed on 2014-09-20

The Amur (formerly Siberian) Tiger

Interesting fact!! Amur tigers were once know as Siberian tigers. Why the name change? Their habit has been reduced to a small area in Russia called Amur Valley. I photogrphed these tigers during my summer visits to the Calgary Zoo.
